Hot Pick: Chanell Collen’s ‘Ovule’ Record
Hot Pick is a multi-layered music series that aims to highlight the hottest dance records, music videos, and podcasts fashioned by lesser known – and/or somewhat established – music producers, recording artists and emerging remixers currently based in the African continent.
This week’s song of choice is a scorching hot afro tech house record, entitled “Ovule” – a six-minute long (fairly decent) audio presentation from South African Durban-based record producer, deejay and remixer, Chanell Collen’s “Expression” EP.
Although the aforementioned EP also includes an equally impressive collaborative effort with Soulistic Music’s KZN-based record producer, Enoo Napa, we still reckon that “Ovule” is without a doubt an exceptionally well-crafted master piece and arguably the most noteworthy solo production from the entire 3-track offering.
That being said, we had a brief discussion with Chanell Collen about the inspiration and fascinating story behind the song. You can check out the short interview below and/or listen to a sneaky preview of the song further down below.

How would you describe this song to an unfamiliar ear?
It is (predominantly) an afro tech house track that also leans towards the deep house genre. The aim was to try and establish a good balance between the Western tech sound and South African deep house vibe. Basically, my outcome was to make it universal.
What is the inspiration behind the record?
“Ovule” is the seed before the root is evolved and this track is the start of where and how I want my electronic sound to come across to the listeners who want understand my production.
The whole EP, video and cover design goes well with the track titles and I’m really happy with the end product presented by Aluku Records.
How do you hope the listening public will receive the production?
I’m hoping it will make people happy and enjoy my sound. Actually, my aim is to introduce my sound and make them dance.
