Dominic Neill Talks About His South African Music Awards Nomination
The 24th Annual South African Music Awards (SAMAs) will be taking place on May 24th, 2018, where some of the country’s most notable and/or emerging music talent will be attending this auspicious occasion with the hopes of walking away with an award or two.
To keep you in the loop, we’ve introduced House The SAMAs: an unconventional exploration of the aforementioned music award show as well as the impact and relevance of a South African Music Awards nomination.
Keeping that in mind, we had a casual conversation with South African singer, songwriter Dominic Neill about his first ever SAMA nomination for ‘Record of the Year’ – specifically for his collaborative efforts with South African record producer and disc jockey, DJ Kent on “Love You Still”.
Congratulations, Dominic! How do you feel about being nominated for a South African Music Award?
Awards are a strange one for me, because on the one hand I don’t really make music for awards, but on the hand it is one of the most full proof ways to get a “pat on the back as an artist”.
If you take a step back and look at it, it’s amazing, I’m really chuffed! But, there’ll be life after the wards and when #SAMA25 comes along, it’ll soon be forgotten.
Can you list two common misconceptions about the nomination process and reasons why you would say they are wrong?
I’m not too privy to these misconceptions, etc. I know there’s been a lot of criticism, but it’s not my job as an artist to worry about that. What I can say is that, the ‘ROTY (Record of the Year)’ category is awesome because it’s based purely on radio play, so there’s no room for that, the numbers don’t lie! That’s why I am glad that it’s THIS category we’ve been nominated in.
Since there can only one winner in each category – if, for any reason, you do not win, what kind of overall impact would you like this nomination to have on your career?
It is a beacon for what I can achieve, that’s what it is! If we get into the top 5 and get invited to the show, it’ll be a good party too!
Given the opportunity to change (or improve) anything about the voting process, what would you do? Why?
I’m always an advocate for transparency on every level! So, just put it all out there. Make it all available for everyone so that there is no drama and these misconceptions can cease.
